Mitchell Starc has looked very threatening in his first four overs. In his fourth, he unleashes a bouncer, which Wiaan Mulder safely ducks under.

In the crowd, ice-creams are being consumed with glee. Lord's is looking lovely.

There's a lot of love for Dean Elgar in these underrated XI suggestions. He's left big shoes for Ryan Rickelton to fill.

He's yet to really settle against Josh Hazlewood, who beats his bat a couple of times, but he'll take confidence from the punched four which finished the over.

Underrated 11: M.Trescothick, D. Karunaratne, Younis Khan, Damien Martyn, Ian Bell, Angelo Mathews, Brad Haddin (WK), Dan Vettori, Pete Siddle, Tim Bresnan, Rangana Herath

    Eth and Ash, Lords

Lots of talk about Dean Elgar in an underrated XI and as an Essex fan I have to agree. He was a great replacement for Sir Alastair Cook for Essex, has a decent T20 game too, and he doesn't count as an overseas player!

    Sam, Colchester

Geraint Jones was very underrated (ok maybe not but he was my favourite cricketer and I'll take any excuse to bring him up).

He should probably have two wickets to his name but let's not dwell on that.

Instead, here's a reminder of Mitchell Starc's dismissal of Aiden Markram.

Once we've established that Wiann Mulder did nick that, that's a bad drop from Alex Carey.

Is that a dropped catch off Mitchell Starc?

Alex Carey dives across the slips and puts the ball down. It looks like Wiaan Mulder got an edge on that. Horrible drop if he did.

Both sides are trying to squeeze in an unnatural number three.

Wiaan Mulder averages 21 in Test matches and that's not great if you're a specialist batsman, which he's not. He's been made to fill this slot.

Kavem Hodge for West Indies and Tom Blundell for New Zealand for the underrated XI.

    Elknit, Lancaster

Nissanka is underrated in my view. And Matt Henry from New Zealand, he always seems to bowl well against England.

    Nick

My underrated modern 11 would include Sir Geoffrey Boycott, it seems most modern fans have forgotten what real batting is all about.

Sweetly down the ground by Ryan Rickelton. That's a confidence booster.

  • SA 7-1published at 3 overs

Australia have lined up three slips but that doesn't trouble Ryan Rickelton, who instead drives down the ground for South Africa's first boundary of the day.

Mitchell Starc beats his bat with a swinging delivery later in the over, but Rickelton survives.

Re: Anon at 16:17. That is why there is still no Ashes hope. Mitchell Starc to Zak Crawley. Will last as long as Markram.

The two singles which got the batters off the mark were cheered with gusto.

Getting to the end of the day without losing too many more is absolutely pivotal here.

Ryan Rickelton doesn't waste any time in getting his innings under way. He defends Josh Hazlewood's first ball and dashes for a single off the second.

Wiaan Mulder also grabs a single and Rickelton picks up a second later in the over. There'll be no ducks for this pair.

Josh Hazlewood, as he's done so often, will share the new ball with Mitchell Starc.

Oh my goodness, he's out. Aiden Markram played it onto his stumps and he's out for a duck.

A great start for Australia. Mitchell Starc has done what he's done so often in his career and gets a wicket in his first over.

Wickets continue to tumble after tea! Mitchell Starc strikes with his first over!

He nearly had Aiden Markram two balls earlier, an inswinger completely bamboozling the opener. He was saved by an inside edge on that occasion but he doesn't get a second life, chopping onto his stumps.

    Elation for Australia.

Conditions are looking markedly different to when South Africa chose to bowl. It's a lot warmer now.
